A professional kaval from my Signature series, turned from ebony or grenadilla, two of the finest woods for high-end wind instruments.

Both are naturally dense, which keeps moisture out and gives a warm, powerful tone with a quick, responsive feel; their deep black colour gives the kaval a classic look. The two woods are listed together because they look identical.

The kaval has a bright, clear tone often described as breathy, with a wide range that runs from soft, mellow melodies to powerful, driving rhythms.

Good to know: grenadilla, or African blackwood, is the same wood used for professional clarinets and oboes - one of the densest tonewoods in the world.

Choosing your key

• D - the easiest to start on, the most common key, and the one all my lessons and materials are built around. My recommendation for beginners.
• C - slightly lower, and it blends beautifully with the human voice; traditionally the key used to accompany folk singers.
• Bb - deep and rich, but a little harder to play: it is longer, so the finger holes are spaced wider apart.
