It is turned from cornelian cherry aged for ten years - dryan, the wood the old Bulgarian kaval makers worked in, and the same wood as my flagship kaval. What makes this one different is the fittings: instead of the usual buffalo horn, the mouthpiece and both joints are made from a deep black marbled composite, veined with white, and finished with polished aluminium rings. Every piece of that material is patterned differently, so the veining on this instrument exists on no other kaval.

The tone is the cornelian cherry tone I know well - soft, warm and tender, deeply characteristic of the Bulgarian style. The fittings support the joints as the wood expands while you play, exactly as horn does.

Good to know: dryan will not keep the colour you see in the photographs. With playing and regular oiling the wood darkens steadily, so the kaval grows deeper and richer in colour for as long as you own it - and against the black fittings, that contrast only gets stronger with the years.
