Handmade Bulgarian kavals, from the affordable PVC and aluminium Intro models, through the solid Delrin and American walnut Mid instruments, up to the professional range: wooden kavals in cornelian cherry, ebony, grenadilla, cocobolo, bubinga and wenge, plus the glass-like transparent acrylic Pro. Available in D, C, Bb and A, with the A pitched a semitone below the Bb and made to order. Mouthpieces and joints are machined acetal (Delrin), never animal horn. Every kaval is turned by master kaval maker Biser Vasilev and personally played, tuned and approved by Zhivko Vasilev before it ships, and every instrument above the Intro can be paid in four instalments. Kaval prices

What a kaval costs comes down to the material and the key. Every price below is for a finished, tuned instrument, ready to play.

• Plastic or aluminium, Intro: from 149 EUR. A real, in-tune kaval to learn on, not a toy.
• Starter Bundle: 179 EUR. The Intro kaval together with the full beginner course.
• Delrin or American walnut, Mid: 290 to 490 EUR. The step up once you are past the first year.
• Wood, Pro: 370 to 810 EUR. Cornelian cherry, wenge, cocobolo, bubinga, ebony and grenadilla.
• Leather case: from 25 EUR.

Within a single model the spread is the key. D is the standard and the base price. C and B flat cost a little more. A is a considerably larger instrument and costs more to make. Kavals in C, B flat and A are made to order, usually two to three weeks.
