What is a kaval?

The kaval is a traditional Bulgarian end-blown wooden flute, central to Balkan folk music. It has a warm, expressive tone and is played by blowing across the open end.

Which key kaval should a beginner choose?

The kaval in D (“Re”) is the most common and the one we recommend for beginners — it is the standard for Bulgarian folk music and the key most learning material is written for. C and Bb kavals are lower and are often chosen by more experienced players or for specific repertoire.

What is the difference between a plastic and a wooden kaval?

Plastic kavals (PVC or polyacetal) are affordable, durable and weather-resistant — ideal for beginners or travel. Wooden kavals (cornelian cherry, wenge, ebony/grenadilla, cocobolo, bubinga, walnut) are professional instruments with a richer, warmer tone, each wood giving a slightly different character.

Are the kavals handmade?

Yes. The wooden kavals are handcrafted by Zhivko Vasilev.

What tuning are the kavals in?

They are tuned to standard concert pitch (A=440) and available in D, C and Bb.

Do the kavals come with a case?

The kaval is sold as the instrument. We also offer a premium leather case (fits kavals in D, C and Bb) as a separate accessory.

How do I care for a wooden kaval?

Keep it away from sudden temperature and humidity changes, remove moisture after playing, and oil the bore periodically with a suitable oil. Avoid leaving it in direct sun or in a hot car.
